THE CHALLENGE
Framing in photography is a composition technique where the photographer uses elements within a scene to create a “frame” around the main subject. These elements—such as doorways, windows, branches, arches, people, or objects in the foreground—surround or partially enclose the subject to draw the viewer’s eye directly to it. Framing adds depth, context, and visual interest, helping separate the subject from the background while guiding attention in a natural and intentional way. It can also create a sense of storytelling by placing the subject within its environment rather than isolating it completely. Students must learn and demonstrate their knowledge with the lesson and assignment below.
Framing is a composition technique that uses objects to “frame” and focus the viewer’s attention on the main subject

Using framing effectively can turn a standard snapshot into a more compelling, artistic photograph

Why Use Framing in Photography?
Focus attention on the subject: Framing helps emphasize what you want viewers to look at by creating a natural boundary around it.

Give context/ Story Telling: Using frames like doorways, windows, or architecture can show something about the setting or environment.

Add visual interest: Frames can make a composition more complex and intriguing, contributing to a stronger overall image.

USING THE RULE OF THIRD’S
When you break a photograph down into 3rds, so that you have 9 equal parts. Think of a tic, tac, toe board.
