Voice Over & Closed Caption Edit

Closed caption and audio editing concept

THE CHALLENGE

You will create a VOICE OVER for a video, ensuring that the tone matches the content’s purpose and audience. Spend time planning your script, focusing on key messages and the audience’s emotions. Then, use Adobe Premiere Pro to combine the video and audio, enhancing quality by adjusting levels, adding effects, and syncing voice-over to visuals. Finally, create Closed captioning for accessibility, helping to reach a broader audience, including those who are hard of hearing. Use the resources below, including tutorials on voice-over best practices and guides on Adobe Premiere Pro.

STEP 001: CHOOSE YOUR VIDEO

Choose a video from the list here:

STEP 002: SCRIPT WRITING

SCRIPT WRITING

Create a script that matches the chosen video, ensuring proper pacing to align with its duration while maintaining clarity and engagement. For a 28-second video, the script should also take 28 seconds to read before recording begins, allowing for a seamless integration of visuals and audio. Consider incorporating elements such as pauses for emphasis, natural inflections, and variations in tone to enhance the viewer’s experience and maintain their attention throughout the presentation. This thoughtful approach will contribute to a more polished and professional final product.

STEP 003: RECORDING

Time to record. There are several ways to record. Once the recordings are completed, please give each group members a copy of your recording.

See below the various options for recording.

OPTION 1: ZOOM H1N RECORDING

Zoom Mic H1N – This is one of my favorite ways to record. You need to go into a secluded space and record your audio.

OPTION 2: Using your phone to record

Using your phone is the most easiest. You can choose to do this only using a voice memo app.

OPTION 3: THE PROFESSIONAL WAY

The most complicated way but yields the best result through hard work and dedication

STEP 004: EDITING

Assessment criteria for scriptwriting & pre-production, audio recording quality, sound design, audio mixing, and file export delivery.

Criteria Exceeding (4) Meeting (3) Approaching (2) Far from Approaching (1)
Scriptwriting and Pre-Production 4 — Exceeding
Creates a highly compelling script with a clear target audience, strong call-to-action, precise time stamps, and creative sound effect/music cues.
3 — Meeting
Drafts a well-structured script that effectively targets an audience, includes a call-to-action, and incorporates clear audio cues.
2 — Approaching
Develops a basic script, but lacks clear audio cues or has an incomplete call-to-action.
1 — Far from Approaching
Produces an incomplete or unformatted script that significantly strays and lacks necessary audio cues.
Audio Recording Quality 4 — Exceeding
Delivers exceptionally clear, articulate voiceover work with professional pacing, zero background noise, and optimal microphone technique.
3 — Meeting
Captures clear voiceover audio with good pacing and volume, free from major background noise or distortion.
2 — Approaching
Records voiceover audio that is mostly understandable, though minor background noise, popping, or uneven pacing is present.
1 — Far from Approaching
Provides audio that is muffled, distorted, or severely obscured by background noise, making the speech difficult to understand.
Sound Design and Track Layering 4 — Exceeding
Masterfully layers voice, royalty-free background music, and sound effects to create an engaging, cohesive, and immersive audio story.
3 — Meeting
Successfully layers voice, background music, and sound effects to support the message and enhance the overall ad production.
2 — Approaching
Includes voice, music, and sound effects, but the elements feel disjointed or slightly distract from the main message.
1 — Far from Approaching
Uses minimal or mismatched audio elements, resulting in a flat composition that lacks appropriate music or sound effects.
Audio Mixing and Level Balancing 4 — Exceeding
Achieves a flawless mix where music and sound effects automatically duck smoothly under the voiceover, maintaining crisp clarity and consistent volume.
3 — Meeting
Balances audio levels effectively so that background music and sound effects are distinct without overpowering the voiceover.
2 — Approaching
Mixes audio with inconsistent volume levels, causing the background music or effects to occasionally drown out the voiceover.
1 — Far from Approaching
Delivers an unbalanced mix where the voiceover is severely overpowered by background audio or the overall volume fluctuates wildly.
Exporting and File Format Delivery 4 — Exceeding
Exports and submits the final radio spot seamlessly in the exact requested file format, meeting precise audio quality standards and file-naming rules.
3 — Meeting
Exports and submits the final radio spot correctly using the designated audio file format and length specifications.
2 — Approaching
Submits the audio file using an incorrect file format or with minor technical errors in length or naming conventions.
1 — Far from Approaching
Fails to submit the audio in a playable format or submits a corrupted file that cannot be evaluated.
